- (2) 48-Jimmie Johnson: It’s now Jimmie Johnson’s championship to lose.
- (1) 17-Matt Kenseth: It’s not just Kenseth, all the Roush Racing teams appear to have lost their edge on the intermediate tracks.
- (4) 8-Dale Earnhardt Jr: Earnhardt Jr and the 8 team will unlikely win the 2006 Nextel Cup championship, but the way they’re running, they are sure to be favorites heading into 2007.
- (8) 20-Tony Stewart: Stewart lost a little bit of weight, and won a few more races.
- (6) 29-Kevin Harvick: I still haven’t heard any Scott Riggs quotes since the infamous Harvick/10 team scuffle after the race at Texas.
- (5) 11-Denny Hamlin: You rarely hear Denny Hamlin’s name mentioned throughout the race, but somehow he finds his way into the top ten.
- (3) 31-Jeff Burton: When it rains, it pours!
- (7) 24-Jeff Gordon: Championships didn’t use to be this hard to come by for Jeff Gordon and the 24 group.
- (12) 5-Kyle Busch: Kyle Busch finally had a productive race.
- (9) 9-Kasey Kahne: If there was an award for inconsistency, Kasey Kahne and the 9 team would be a lock!
- (10) 6-Mark Martin: Mark Martin finished 1 spot ahead of Mike Bliss, and one spot behind David Gilliland, and he didn’t even run into to anyone trying to make a pit stop.
- (11) 99-Carl Edwards: Last year at this time, Carl Edwards and the 99 team owned the 1.5-mile tracks. Not this year!
- (15) 2-Kurt Busch: The 2 team appears to be making some positive strides; the 12-team appears to be falling apart.
- (NR) 07-Clint Bowyer: For a while, Clint Bowyer was the only guy who could run with Tony Stewart. Expect to see the 07-team in victory lane before the season’s over.
- (NR) 42-Casey Mears: Casey Mears has ran decent lately, but he’s kind of been lost in the Juan Pablo Montoya mania.
