That is why he is expected to cross the threshold into Formula One as soon as 2008. Bourdais has won three Champ Car championships, including the 2006 title with Newman/Haas.
Last week, Bourdais tested a Formula One car for Toro Rosso at the Jerez circuit. It was the first time Bourdais had wheeled a Formula One car since 2002.
Even though Bourdais has candidly divulged his desire to convert from Champ Car to Formula One, he remains dedicated to his current employer stating that he will defend his Champ Car title in 2007.
"I will defend my title in Champ Car in 2007 with Newman Haas," Bourdais said while testing last week. "This test will make it possible to get an idea of the situation, and I am hoping that is the start of something concrete, namely a race drive."
The 27-year old driver has won three successive Champ Car titles, the first driver to achieve that feat since Ted Horn from 1946 to 1948. In 2006, Bourdais was superlative as he won 7 of the 14 races on the schedule.
If Bourdais chooses to leave, he will leave a cavernous hole as far as star power in the Champ Car series. A.J. Allmendinger, the second best driver in 2006, and the guy that appeared to be the future of Champ Car, will begin his NASCAR Nextel Cup career in 2007 with Team Red Bull.
Champ Car needs Paul Tracy to step it up and win some races. He has the potential to become the Tony Stewart of the Champ Car world.
In other open-wheel news, Indy Racing League rookie of the year Marco Andretti tested a Formula One car last week with Honda. It appears the F1 is the place to be in open-wheel.
Al Unser Jr was acquitted of all misdemeanor charges brought against him. Last August, Unser was arrested when he contravened police orders to depart a roadblock near a crime scene.
